JCC: The Cuban Missile Crisis

What technology could be as fundamental, as destructive as the splitting of the atom? With the development of nuclear fission, humanity made a scientific breakthrough of enormous proportion and gained the ability to wipe itself off the face of the planet. Maybe our great filter moment is far behind us in our evolutionary past, or far ahead in some unknown peril, that we have yet to discover. Perhaps, however, our great filter was crossed during those 13 days in October 1962 when the hands of the world’s two superpowers hovered over the nuclear button. At QMUNi 2019 we return to those fateful days - this time with you and your fellow committee members stepping in the shoes of those in Washington and Moscow who had the fate of humanity at their fingertips. As members of U.S President John F. Kennedy’s Executive Committee of the National Security Council or Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev’s Presidium, where will you direct humanities' course? Will cooler heads win out and cause peace to prevail? Or will the fervour of a few men sitting in a conference room result in unimaginable destruction; and potentially, the end of the world as we know it?”
